Without so much as an explanation, DMOZ.org have announced the closure of one of the few old skool human-edited search engines.
It appears AOL simply pulled the plug without seeing need for the site in mid-March 2017. It’s such a shame for many users, and more so for the editors; especially those – like myself – ploughing in hours to try to stay on top on workload.
Back in the day, pre-the Great Googling Machine etc, key word stuffing produced shady results from search engines and so a human-edited directly without promotional spiel or influence was an extremely valuable tool.
With the advancement of SEO techniques and search engine algorithms – all of which benefit us greatly – it kind of left poor old DMOZ without much use going forward.
Although I understand the decision, I am gutted as was proud to be part of such a community and was busy applying for extra categories.
Oh well, sometimes shit just happens.
Thanks DMOZ crew, your hard work was appreciated.
